Purpose:
To commit The LCBA to equality of opportunity for all and to ensure that its membership, volunteers, and activities uphold fairness, dignity, and respect. This policy supports the values that make canal life and community interaction open and inclusive for everyone.


1. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • LCBA volunteers
  • Committee members
  • Members and participants at LCBA events
  • Individuals interacting with LCBA in any official capacity

2. Policy Statement

The LCBA is committed to:

  • Creating an inclusive environment where everyone is treated equitably
  • Embracing diversity and eliminating discrimination based on protected characteristics
  • Encouraging equal participation in all volunteer roles and community activities
  • Upholding dignity, respect, and fairness in all interactions and decisions

Protected characteristics include, but are not limited to:

  • Age

  • Gender identity or reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race, ethnicity, nationality

3. Principles of Equality and Inclusion

3.1 Fair Treatment
The LCBA ensures that all volunteers and community members are treated fairly in recruitment, roles, support, and progression.

3.2 Inclusive Practices
The LCBA will:

  • Address and eliminate barriers to participation
  • Familiarise volunteers with equality principles during induction

3.3 Supportive Environment
The LCBA will maintain an environment where:

  • Volunteers feel safe, welcome, and respected
  • Discrimination, harassment, bullying, or victimisation is not tolerated

4. Roles and Responsibilities

4.1 Volunteers

  • Uphold the policy in all interactions
  • Report concerns about discrimination or exclusion to the LCBA committee

4.2 LCBA Committee

  • Ensure equality best practice in governance and volunteer engagement
  • Monitor and address any issues related to equality and diversity

5. Reporting and Resolution

  • Instances of discrimination or exclusion should be reported to the LCBA committee or designated contact.
  • Reports will be investigated sensitively and acted upon in accordance with LCBA procedures and relevant law.

6. Monitoring and Review

LCBA will regularly review this Equality Policy to ensure it reflects best practices and legal standards. Volunteers and members will be informed of any updates.
