Next Review: 01 / 01 / 2027

Purpose:
To outline the standards of behaviour, professionalism, and mutual respect expected from all volunteers representing the Lancaster Canal Boaters Association (LCBA).

1. Introduction

LCBA volunteers play a vital role in building supportive community connections along the Lancaster Canal by offering advice, welfare support, shared experience, and events that enhance life on the water. As a volunteer, you are an ambassador for LCBA and must uphold its values of respect, integrity, inclusivity, and safety in all interactions.

2. General Principles

All LCBA volunteers should:

2.1 Represent LCBA Positively

  • Act with professionalism, courtesy, and integrity.
  • Enhance the reputation of LCBA and its mission to strengthen the boating community.

2.2 Respect Boaters, Members & the Public

  • Treat everyone with dignity, respect, and fairness, regardless of background, ability, or belief.
  • Communicate clearly and politely, whether in person, online or in writing.

2.3 Follow Policies and Procedures

  • Adhere to LCBA safeguarding policies (including lone working and welfare procedures).
  • Ensure confidentiality of any personal information, except where disclosure is required to protect someone’s safety.

2.4 Boundaries and Professionalism

  • Maintain clear personal and professional boundaries.
  • Do not offer professional advice outside your expertise.
  • Avoid physical assistance unless trained and authorised.

3. Conduct Expectations

Volunteers must:

  • Treat all individuals and communities without prejudice or discrimination.
  • Abstain from language or behaviour that is offensive, discriminatory, or threatening.
  • Respect privacy and data protection rules.
  • Follow relevant health and safety and lone worker protocols, especially during boat visits.
  • Refrain from illegal or unsafe activities that could harm individuals or LCBA’s reputation.

4. Reporting and Accountability

  • Volunteers must report any breach of this Code to a designated supervisor or committee member.
  • Breaches may lead to review, suspension of duties, or other action as per LCBA procedures.
  • Volunteers have the right to raise concerns about conduct safely and without fear of retaliation.

5. Commitment to Inclusion

LCBA values diverse perspectives within its boating community and welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds. Volunteers should actively support inclusive participation and equal opportunities for all, in line with the LCBA’s Equality Policy.
