Following the notices sent out by The Canal and River Trust on Thursday 8th July, the LCBA would like to clarify the situation for boaters using the Lancaster canal.

Having spoken to the Canal & River Trust on two occasions and recieving confirmation of the situation on Friday 10th July, after the navigation restriction was changed from ‘closed’ to ‘restricted’, we can confirm that:

“During the period of this notice boaters are not expected to move as per normal navigational requirements. They do not need to apply for an overstay.”

“If you need to move for a pump-out, elsan or essential water supply then you may do so, but only for that and if it is safe to do so.

“It’s important to note that spotters will continue to walk the canal so that there are no gaps in sightings, and they will monitor things such as water levels at bridges, but they will not be marking overstays as movement requirements are suspended while this restriction is in place.”

“The low water levels have been caused by an extremely dry period and water evaporation.If you have any questions then you should contact the Northwest Team at enquiries.northwest@canalrivertrust.org.uk.”

The original navigational restriction notice was extended on Thursday 28th July, to run until 30th July 2026.
